What to expect

Sessions Typically last between 90 minutes and a few hours, depending on the number and scale of plates. The process is slow and hands on: each plate is poured, exposed, developed and fixed in real time. We usually work through a small number of images for each setup, adjusting as we go.

Sessions can range from straightforward portrait sittings to more extended work involving multiple plates, varied poses, mixed formats, or experimentation. Individuals, couples, families, and conceptual sessions are all welcome.

4x5" –– $250 5x7" –– $3008x10" –– $450Additional plates are half price ($125, $150, $225). Tintypes are the standard medium; ambrotypes (on glass) available by request (+$50/plate). You're welcome to mix sizes/formats. Finished plates are provided along with a high-resolution digital file of each.

You're welcome to bring objects, references, or clothing that feel meaningful to the portrait. Because exposures are longer than digital photography (typically between 2 and 10 seconds), simplicity and stillness often translate beautifully. We can discuss ideas ahead of time, or on the day of the session.

I recommend avoiding flat blacks, and if there's going to be more than one of you in the image, try to mix up tones and values. In general,bluish colors appear lighter, reddish colors appear darker. It's helpful to think in terms of shapes and textures, fabrics and layers. Necklines and collars, for example, and how much skin is showing around the neck and shoulders. You're welcome to bring options that we can discuss.
