What to expect

I often make a couple of takes for each setup/subject as we adjust lighting, framing, posture, etc.Afterward, plate(s) are washed, air-dried, scanned, and varnished. You can return an hour or so later for pick-up, or I can ship to you for an additional cost.Your varnished plates are one-of-a-kind originals, archival photographic objects that will last for hundreds of years. You're welcome to bring food or drinks to the session. Make yourself comfortable! This is a special opportunity to create something that can be treasured for generations.Kids are welcome as well. Pets welcome by request.

Sessions range from straightforward portrait sittings to more extended work involving multiple plates, varied poses, mixed formats, or experimentation. Individuals, couples, families, and conceptual sessions are all welcome.For groups larger than 4, please write to me to coordinate in advance.

Preparing

You're welcome to bring objects, references, or clothing that feel meaningful to the portrait. Because exposures are longer than digital photography (typically between 2 and 10 seconds), simplicity and stillness often translate beautifully, and are the standard approach. The long exposures of this medium can be utilized for various effects, and while incredibly unpredictable, can yield for some on the most unique images. Reach out with any thoughts, ideas, or questions along these lines. We can discuss ideas ahead of time, or on the day of the session.

Clothing

I recommend avoiding flat blacks, and if there's going to be more than one of you in the image, try to mix up tones and values. In general,bluish colors appear lighter, reddish colors appear darker. It's helpful to think in terms of shapes and textures, fabrics and layers. Necklines and collars, for example, and how much skin is showing around the neck and shoulders. You're welcome to bring options that we can discuss.
